Egypt will release 2300 prisoners including 300 Islamic militants to mark Eid el Fitr. Militant prisoners have repented and vow not to return to violence. Others freed hold varied crimes and good conduct records. the period of unrest since 1992 has left over 1000 dead.
IRNA reports five people died and 44 injured as worshipers stampeded at the entrance to a Bakhtaran mosque during Ramadan breaking rites. The dead include a 7 year old girl. incident occurred Saturday night, 280 miles from Tehran.
Hundreds of riot police beat protesters in Belgrade amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations. Tear gas water cannons and arrests followed a tense bridge standoff as opposition leaders reported injuries including leaders Vesna Pesic and Zoran Djindjic.
The White House proposed an open-door partnership with Republican state governors to tackle competitiveness and education. Erskine Bowles urged bipartisanship to cut deficits while boosting training and research as Clinton plans meetings with governors and the State of the Union. Police arrested Francis Ernestberg 40 and Oston Osotonu 24 in Vallejo after bombings hit a Solano County courthouse and a Wells Fargo bank. A third suspect Kevin Lee Robinson 29 sought. Authorities seized 500 pounds of dynamite plus 60 sticks in a car. No injuries occurred.
