Mail service battles winter across northern states

The Postal Service faced heavy snow and freezing temperatures this winter with deliveries halted in Buffalo Rochester and Watertown New York and in rural northern Maine. Some routes resumed midweek but delays persisted on snowbound roads while carriers battled arctic conditions.

Douglas County gains in idle funds as investment rules expand

Douglas County's idle funds earnings rose eightfold in eight years due to expanded local investment authority. Since 1968 the county has earned nearly $1 million on idle tax funds and $193,377 from federal revenue sharing, with last year’s idle fund earnings reaching $289,450. County officials credit refined procedures and legislative changes enabling shorter or even sub-30 day investments, plus revenue-sharing allocations rising from $18,114 in 1973 to $60,784.35.

Landlord Tenant Self-Help Bill Opens Health Safety Route

Kansas lawmaker Mike Glover introduces a self help provision allowing tenants to fix health and safety hazards and bill landlords up to 100 dollars or half rent. The measure also lets landlords act if tenants neglect duties, with co sponsors Rep. Baker and Rep. Meacham. Also filed are bills on life insurance beneficiary payments and on SRS handling of confidential mental health records.

Public hearing on Lawrence District 497 elementary schools set

Coffeyville Editor Named KU Information Director

Robert Burdick formerly Coffeyville Journal managing editor will become director of information at Kansas University starting March 1. He will lead KU's Division of Information and the Office of University Relations media relations branch. Burdick grew up near Kansas City, is a 1969 KU journalism graduate, and has previous roles at the Kansas City Times and Detroit News.

Three Topeka Men Face Robbery Charges In Kansas

Three Topeka men William E. Ray 21 Carl Baker 31 and John E. King 18 were to be charged in Ottawa County for a Sunday night robbery at the Ramada Inn Restaurant and linked to a United States Bank of Minneapolis heist. Det Wayne Schmille’s interview and tips set the case for aggravated robbery charges. They are also sought in Geary County for a local business holdup with Douglas County prosecution planned after Ottawa County.

Measles rise alarms Kansas and Iowa, CDC says
