Delta Storytelling Shines in Kansas University Tour
The Negro Ensemble Company presented From the Mississippi Delta at Liberty Hall in Lawrence as part of the Kansas University Concert Series New Directions. Endesha Ida Mae Holland’s play uses monologues and storytelling to recount a Black woman’s life in the 1950s and 60s Delta, with three actresses portraying over 60 roles and guiding the audience through scenes of rape, birth, and civil rights leadership. The touring cast including Gwendolyn Roberts-Frost, Lizan Mitchell, and Brenda Dansbey delivered strong performances, though some humor and intimacy dimmed in the Liberty Hall setting.
