Floyd aims to run a business and work with children after high school, planning college for elementary education or social work. Youth of the Year celebration set for Lawrence Arts Center
The 2015 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year event is held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at 940 New Hampshire Street Lawrence. Candidates will give speeches on character growth leadership and goals before a judge panel selects the winner who advances to the March 3 state competition in Topeka and competes for a $1,000 scholarship plus regional contests.

Cans for the Community turns cans into gifts for Lawrence nonprofits
The all‑volunteer group collects tens of thousands of cans annually through eight board members, a network of volunteers, and twelve can houses in city parking lots plus 90 local businesses. Since 2005 it has funded about 80 nonprofits with grants, often without paperwork, hoping curbside recycling remains strong.

Apartment work disrupts parking near 11th Street complex
Lawrence reports demolition and construction of a new apartment complex south of 11th Street between Mississippi and Indiana streets. On street parking on the south side of 11th Street, east side of Mississippi Street, and west side of Indiana Street will be unavailable during construction through July 2016. A separate project to build a diamond interchange at Kansas Highway 10 and Bob Billings Parkway/15th Street runs weekdays in daylight with minimal motorist impact but detours the South Lawrence Trafficway trail between Sixth Street and Bob Billings Parkway.
