NAACP extends staff furloughs amid financial strain
The NAACP extended a two week staff furlough for another two weeks as it works to recover from near four million dollars in debt. Chairman William F. Gibson said 74 of 88 furloughed workers would be rehired after year’s start, with remaining layoffs possible. The group’s debt rose under former executive director Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., who paid a $332,400 out of court settlement in a sexual harassment case.
