New KBI director named amid county and court shifts
Week in review: Jim Malson, a 53 year old rural Lecompton resident, named director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation effective 9 a.m. Thursday after serving as acting chief since Dave Johnson’s resignation on December 9. Douglas County District Judge Mike Malone appointed as 7th Judicial District administrative judge, succeeding James Paddock. County officials seek Supreme Court review of the South Lawrence trafficway ruling, arguing bond authority and future financing would be jeopardized without a new election. A jury found that a November 13 KU student’s death was an accident after the shooter testified the gun was not loaded, with details of the incident at a Lawrence apartment.

Prices for a gallon of fuel surged into the 90 cent range as wholesale costs rose about 11 cents since December 23, driven by cold weather and a Baton Rouge refinery fire. Local distributors, including M M Oil Co., say price movements track refinery actions and market volatility, with many stations reporting roughly a 10 cent increase over the past week.
