University of Kansas researchers secured a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department to help children in foster care stay with relatives or kin. KU was among five national recipients in the program.
Becci Akin, associate professor of social welfare, will lead a five year grant as principal investigator and project director for Health and Human Services research. She notes that kin placements support child health and development, while Kansas aims to place half of foster children with relatives but current rates are under 40 percent. The project seeks improvements for Kansas with nationwide applicability.
Allen said a community needs assessment showed 30 percent of respondents below the poverty line said fines hindered library use. The policy forgave all overdue fines, restoring about 5,000 accounts, while lost or damaged items still incur charges.
Spates and attorney Adam Hall filed a motion asserting self defense in the fatal shooting of Willis during an alleged drug deal gone wrong at a Lawrence residence. The filing contends Willis tried to rob Romero and was shot by Spates after a struggle, with Romero escaping.
