The Kansas Highway Patrol reports four fatal crashes from Dec 21 to 26, causing five deaths. One victim was a 36-year-old Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputy. No crash was alcohol related. The KHP issued over 1,000 speeding tickets and 1,200 warnings during Dec 23 26, up from the prior year.
Hutchinson Correctional Facility officials suspect a death by own action pact among three inmates who tried to hang themselves in their cells in the segregation unit. Prison spokesman Dirk Moss said the Oct. 30 incident is mostly complete in investigation. Inmates used bedding sheets, were treated at an internal clinic, two sent to a Wichita hospital, and all returned to the population within days. Names not released.
Kansas KanCare firms face gaps in specialty networks with Sunflower State Health Plan and Amerigroup lacking nephrology in Douglas and Shawnee counties and dermatology allergy orthopedics in nearby areas. UnitedHealthcare reports no neonatologists in Shawnee, while the state and administrators stress ongoing network expansion and guaranteed specialist access for Medicaid recipients.
Kansas wins federal approval for KanCare waivers moving the state to a managed care model. UnitedHealth plans 320 new KanCare jobs and a 1.5 million investment in an employment program. Amerigroup and Sunflower State Health Plan expand statewide, hiring hundreds more as safeguards allow 90 day physician continuity and out of network care.
