December prices push farm costs to new highs

The Agriculture Department reports December prices paid to farmers rose 0.7 percent from November, placing 1989 among the highest years on record. Hog, cattle, milk, and egg prices drove gains while lettuce, oranges, cotton, and broilers declined. Most data were collected before a Florida Texas freeze. The figures await revision next month. The Drug Enforcement Administration refused to relax marijuana restrictions, keeping it on Schedule I despite NORML’s petition and a 1988 recommendation by DEA judge Francis Young that it be reclassified as Schedule II for certain medical uses.
