Bell to raise rates in state next month

Southwestern Bell plans a 6.9 million rate increase for Kansas customers starting January 4 despite Kansas Corporation Commission objections. A Cowley County District Court judge approved the interim hike after the KCC rejected a larger request. The average bill will rise 30 to 40 cents as the case proceeds.

Carter studies setup of pension panel

President Carter may announce next month a long delayed commission to study strained pension systems of federal state and local governments. The panel will review Social Security pensions for disabled workers under 65 government pension fund health of funds and double dipping by retirees. It will include Civil Service retirement costs and underfunding concerns.

Woman dies in Pike crash near Bonner Springs

Gladys I. Aiken, 39, of 1019 West 29th, died when her 1977 car left the Kansas Turnpike near Bonner Springs. The vehicle swerved across lanes, went over a bridge guardrail, overturned, exploded, and burned near a creek. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. funeral arrangements are pending in Drexel, Missouri.

Baker University Fire Safety Inspections Planned for February

State Fire Marshal's office will conduct annual fire safety checks at Baker University in February focusing on campus facilities and Greek housing. Lawrence inspector Clark Brubaker said teams will first inspect larger state universities then move to junior colleges and smaller colleges in the region. He noted a 1976 Kappa Sigma house fire that killed five as a catalyst, but staffing improvements also drive the intensified inspections.

Elevator motor overload caused Lawrence Memorial power outage

Hospital administrator Don Lenz said a overloaded elevator motor burned out a motor and blew fuses. The 9 to 9:25 a.m. Thursday outage left patient care areas on emergency power while Kansas Power and Light investigated. KPL manager Fred Bryan said the issue was internal to the hospital and a breaker was open.
