In Brookline Massachusetts a man named Richard R. Grasso 34 of South Boston was found shot twice in the head stuffed in the trunk of his car after police received an anonymous tip. Grasso was linked to William Bennett an alleged Boston underworld figure who became the 47th victim in a string of killings that began in March 1964. Bennett was found shot multiple times in Dorchester.
A two alarm basement fire at Katz drug store in downtown Kansas City Kansas caused heavy damage early today. Thick smoke from plastics and oil sent seven firefighters to a hospital, a department spokesman said.
Two Santa Fe freight trains collided on opposite tracks near a switch ten miles west of Kansas City, derailing a diesel locomotive and 12 freight cars. Fireman James Yardley of Shawnee Kansas, 40, sustained a knee injury. About 200 feet of rail on one side and 100 feet on the other were ripped up, blocking the mainline. Wreckage was to be cleared by noon, with through trains rerouted via Topeka and Emporia.
Crown Point Indiana AP report says Democratic precinct committeewoman Marion Tokarski posted 15000 bond after grand jury indicted her on five counts of conspiracy to violate Indiana election code over false voter registrations in the Gary mayoral election. Prosecution cites fraud probe and relates to other unnamed defendants.
Lyle M. Potter age 38 died Friday evening from an apparent heart attack while driving a wheat truck about five miles west of Utica in Ness County near the Lane-Ness county line. He was found in the truck after it ran off Highway K-4 into a field. Potter, a driver for Holstein Trucking Co. in Kansas City, was hauling wheat from Shields in Lane County. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Quisenberry Chapel in Tonganoxie with burial in Reno Cemetery. Survivors include a son, parents, a sister, and three brothers. He was a VRW member in Lawrence.
Singapore dispatch reports Gov. George Romney of Michigan expresses optimism about Southeast Asia after a week touring Vietnam and surrounding areas. He says the long range outlook is more favorable and cites a brighter basis for future dealings before continuing to New Delhi on the west leg of his world tour.
Pentagon figures show 118 truce violations during a Christmas ceasefire in South Vietnam. Seven allied servicemen died, including two Americans, and 33 Communists. Major incidents numbered 40, with shelling of a provincial capital cited. Communists reportedly moved substantial materiel, and about 850 trucks were seen on the Than Hoa to Dong Hoi highway, 750 heading south.
City lawmen listed several thefts and a vandalism incident. Victoria Cartwright reported a break in on early morning vandal entry with damage to a door frame worth 10 dollars. Others cited include Wendell Collins who had a portable television stolen, Richard Raney who lost outdoor Christmas lights, and Larry Schooley whose wife’s wedding rings and a watch were stolen. The thefts occurred Friday or last week.
Gov. Philip Hoff disclosed a $300 million accounting mistake by the Vermont Highway Department tied to the 10 year arterial road program. The underestimation raises the total cost to $457 million and may delay several projects up to nine years. Hoff proposes a one cent per gallon gas tax increase in 1968. Republican critic Elbert Moulton called the situation a mess.
The Defense Department states New Orleans District Attorney James Garrison was discharged for physical disability in 1951. Pentagon reports intensified after a Chicago Tribune copyright story alleged long term psychiatric care and a 40 year medical history. Ward, Garrison’s assistant, calls the claims hogwash and notes Garrison remains a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.
The Kansas Supreme Court granted a stay of execution to William Frederick Zimmer who faced hanging next Thursday for kidnaping and slaying 7-year-old Gladys Cora Johnson of Topeka. He received death on the kidnapping charge and life imprisonment on the murder count.
Detroit report says 479,470 Pontiacs built from September 1964 through October 1965 are recalled to inspect the steering idler arm assembly for separation risk. Owners receive letters directing free dealer inspection and replacement of defective parts to prevent a pull to the right when brakes are used.
Sunday closing laws permit clubs to stay open until 8 am while Times Square plans a midnight light ball drop. Honolulu hosts multiple outdoor displays and indoor events at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Seattle offers a $55 couples party, and Iowa, Delaware, Ohio, Maine, Alabama, Arkansas face liquor bans. New Mexico clubs plan 24 hour pre celebrations in Albuquerque.
A city ordinance against Sunday parades shifts Miami New Year celebrations from Sunday to Saturday night. The Orange Bowl parade tradition will be paused in favor of the earlier event to comply with local rules.
Friday Wells said the city is acquiring Michigan Street lots north of Hight Street to join 1.25 acres into about a two acre park with a drainage ditch to be developed as a picnic area. Hill Friday urged naming the park for his mother while Allen noted ongoing land research and legal notices. The commission approved a four way stop at 21st and Ousdahl and barred parking on Massachusetts Street from North Park to 13th. Allen urged denying a $22 000 claim from West Hills Apartments for sewer damage, with potential suit if not paid by January.
Combined Kansas University choruses and University Symphony will present Verdi's Requiem at 3 30 p m on January 7 in Hoch Auditorium. A prior KU notice saying the concert was Sunday is incorrect. Students are on Christmas vacation, classes resume at 7 30 a m Wednesday. Journal World today runs a year end chronology section highlighting local news events.
