Fence-Checked High-Voltage Lines by Air Over Kansas
Dennis Sooby pilots a two-seat Cessna 150 for Kansas Power and Light Co. checking transmission lines across hundreds of miles. Flying at about 110 mph and 50 feet altitude, he surveys lines from Lawrence to Sunflower, Kansas City, Olathe, and beyond, covering the grid in short hops and about 13 to 14 hours total. The work, dangerous and thrilling, requires precise maneuvers and quick dives into valleys and hills to inspect insulators and equipment.
