Carter forecasts tax cut as likely part of recovery plan

President-elect Carter said a tax cut is a likely prospect in a broad economic stimulus program to be unveiled next week. He stressed job creation remains his top priority and expects a final package costing about 15 to 20 billion dollars, with public works and tax cuts to fight unemployment and inflation. He also called a 1977 meeting with Brezhnev a likely prospect for next year.

Thai claims Soviet missiles in Laos highlands

Thai former foreign minister Thanat Khoman said intelligence reports point to Soviet missile silos in Laos highland areas, possibly aimed at China or Thailand. Pentagon and State Department officials in Washington reported no knowledge or comment on such silos.

North winds bring sharp chill to Kansas with snow flurries

The north wind returns at 20 to 25 mph bringing cold air into Kansas after near record highs. Overnight lows dropped into the teens and 20s with highs not rising much past 30 in parts of the state. The National Weather Service expects cooler conditions through the week and a chance of snow flurries tonight or tomorrow. Wednesday highs are forecast around 30.

Regents drop bond plan for university building fund

The Kansas Board of Regents abandoned a $100 million bond proposal to finance major construction at Kansas University and other regent institutions. Officials cited legal limits on using the Educational Building Fund to back bonds and will seek a one half mill increase in the building fund levy to fund capital projects over time.

Commerce Department reports a record 906 million monthly U.S. trade deficit for November driven by falling exports of food and rising imports of petroleum and other goods. If December remains negative, annual gap could near 6.4 billion, with oil imports rising over 75 million to surpass 3 billion.

Gunman robs Lawrence financial firm in daytime hold up

Police hunt a lone black man about six feet tall who robbed Lawrence National Financial Corp at 3 15 pm taking more than $1 000 from a 20 year old clerk. The suspect fled north after ordering her to the back room. FBI aid declined as the bank is not federally insured. KBI assistance may be sought.
