Long wait ahead for former Army site De Soto delays
The Army will resume pollutant cleanup at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant site near De Soto Johnson County Kansas five years after federal funds dried up. Officials cautioned it could be 2028 or later before any housing, shops or offices appear on the 9000 plus acre tract, the largest developable area in the Kansas City metro. The plan includes cleanup challenges including asbestos in buildings and pesticides, with private developers dating the land’s 1990s shutdown and 2005 purchase. The project aims to spur growth along the Kansas 10 corridor linking Johnson County with Lawrence.
