Brooklyn Navy Yard shipbuilding superintendent Capt. Robert C. Gooding testified that in retrospect a temporary sprinkler system could have been installed months ago aboard the fire stricken aircraft carrier constellation. He spoke during a Navy court of inquiry into the blaze.

Ronald Edward Tingle two died Sunday at Kansas University Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted at Oak Hill Cemetery this morning for the 24 day old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Tingle of 302 Perry Street. Rumsey Funeral Home handled arrangements. He is survived by parents a brother Randell Tingle grandparents Ed Tingle Viola Means and Mr and Mrs William Stout a great grandmother Olive Evans.
Stated Royal Arch announced for January 3 at 7 30 pm with O O Anderson secretary and J Underwood H P as officers listed for the event.
A truck driver Allen Ayres yanked his sleeping 9 year old son Roger to safety as his tractor trailer jackknifed at a Kansas Turnpike toll gate and burst into flames. Ayres and Roger suffered burns and were taken to Bethany Hospital. Ten cattle perished in the blaze, two survived with injuries.
The Richland New Year’s Wolf Hunt will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Lecompton resident Charles Worthington announced the Monmouth Township Agricultural Association sponsors the event to reduce coyotes. Twin sisters Anna Montgomery and Mary Owens, both 73, died in a Marceline house fire that destroyed a five room dwelling. A patrolman found flames at 12 40 a m and it took over three hours to control the blaze. The sisters had just returned home after Christmas visits to their children, one at Mission Kansas and the other in St Louis.

NBC correspondent Wilson Hall, 39, was detained at Havana airport by Cuban intelligence agents without charges amid a U S embassy protest. Aly embassy officer who saw Hall said he appeared unaware of the reason for detention and had not been questioned.
William Chamberlain of Sonoma, a 33 year old hypnotist with a PhD claim, admits a Monday night shooting at the Ghiggoli home killing Elmer Ghiggoli and injuring his daughters Sandra and Sharon and the stepson James Morgan. He was captured within about 30 minutes.
Giuseppe Mario Bellanca, renowned aviation designer and founder of the Bellanca company, dies at Memorial Hospital at age 74 from leukemia. His monoplane Columbia achieved the first nonstop transatlantic passenger flight in June 1927 with Clarence D. Chamberlin and Charles A. Levine aboard. In 1931 Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. completed the first nonstop Pacific crossing in a Bellanca aircraft, Tokyo Beach to Wenatchee, a 4,500 mile, 41 hour 13 minute flight.
Kansas Turnpike officials report 75 000 vehicles over the three day weekend about the same as last year. Three accidents occurred with two fatalities near Emporia involving Alex Cruz 25 and Mary Smith 41 both from Kansas City Missouri. Interchange counts show 15330 at eastern terminal Kansas City KS and 8570 at Wellington with 16 arrests including one drunken driving and 206 motorist assists.
Monday a fire gutted the Vern Hultz home at 726 Ash St. Fire Chief Fred Sanders said the blaze started in a divan on the west wall of the front room. Hultz was not at home. neighbors reported the fire and firefighters arrived to control the blaze.
