U S commander urges legitimizing Sunni fighters in Iraq
A top U S commander warned Sunnis who fight al Qaida in Iraq must be rewarded and recognized as legitimate, amid rising violence from attacks around the country. Maj Gen Rick Lynch said the Awakenings and related groups have reduced violence and need jobs and formal integration into security forces, with plans to absorb about 20,000 and spend 155 million dollars on training and development. The Shiite led government worries about tribal loyalties, while U S officials push to capitalize on the security gains and expand local governance in the triangle of death south of Baghdad.
