Spectacular fires mar Christmas across multiple U S areas

The Associated Press reports Christmas Day fires across Baltimore Nashville and North Carolina and New York stricken areas. A six story wholesale produce building fire in Baltimore left eight firemen overcome and several hospitalized. In Nashville the Maxwell House Hotel burned two hours forcing guests into 30 degree weather. A log home fire in Yancey County killed five, Curtis Honeycutt and family. In Groton a mother and her children mourn losses from a farmhouse blaze that killed five and a hired hand May Thayer and Irene L Thayer's husband died earlier.

Bad road conditions Saturday reduced attendance at the 10th Bromelsick Christmas Party for Douglas County scouts and 4-H members. About 1,800 persons attended at Kansas University though organizers expected 2,500. Committee chair W C Fisher cited roads and Christmas travel as factors, noting turnout pleased despite lower numbers. The event honors the will of Alfred Bromersick, who died in 1950.

Abilene Banker Johntz Dies After 63 Years in Bank

ABILENE AP J E Johntz one of the oldest active bankers in Kansas died at 90 after a 63 year career mainly with Citizens Bank of Abilene where he was vice president since 1915.
