London reports from Petrograd indicate growing defection within Bolshevik ranks as soldiers and workers lose faith amid shortages and unrest. Observers note reluctance to fight, rising anti Bolshevik sentiment among Baltic sailors and Red Guard, and questions over Ukraine peace prospects. Reports mention attempts to convene the Constituent Assembly, with clashes over control and access amid ongoing Brest Litovsk negotiations.
The Salvation Army extends thanks for Christmas donations in Lawrence including meals and fuel for the needy. Businessmen contributed wholeheartedly with jars in stores and Dan's Cafe the largest collection site. Lt A C Bealeschil led operations and hopes for a better year. Edwin Endacott in France Ward reports his son Edwin sailed to France ten days ago with the 419th Depot Brigade Detachment of Engineers.

A dedicated baby bond department has opened at Lawrence National Bank to handle bond sales. The department will be in charge of Miss Spangler during the holidays as demand for government certificates grows. The bank cites good interest and security as key reasons for the expansion.
Major Lynne E Mason promoted to commanding officer of the 313th Field Battalion. Formerly leader of Co. 318th Field Signal Battalion the Black Horse Troop he brought his company from Kansas to join the 313th. He recruited from telegraph and telephone units in Kansas and Missouri.
The municipal wood yard is rapidly piling up with about thirty five to forty cords cut for use. Yard manager Mr Cleland reports receiving eight to ten cords daily and plans to gather more as cold weather nears. Mr Charles Radcliff made a short visit to Kansas City this morning.
Washington reports Fuel Administrator Garfield told a Senate inquiry that if the war lasts long, the government may pool coal and sell at reasonable prices. He said profits for large operators are high to spur production, with rail and distribution issues limiting relief.
Greece seeks Greek citizens in the United States to join the American army. The government will suspend usual punishments for enlistments with a foreign power and will reward those supporting American arms. The note was delivered to the U S State Department.
London reports the Russo German peace negotiations were delayed again for one day as Germans seek time to answer Russian terms. An exchange dispatch from Petrograd also said Germany asked for a further postponement until January 24. In Rome, Italian forces recaptured Monte Val Della and Col Del Rosso on the Asiago Plateau but could not hold them.
Washington reports in official circles that Comptroller of the Currency John Sefton Williams is the leading candidate for federal railroad administrator if President Wilson appoints one. If Williams is not chosen, insiders expect Secretary McAdoo to assume the post while remaining Treasury head, appointing railroad men to cabinet roles. Also notes Lt. and Mrs. S. P. Moyer returning to Camp Funston after holidays in Lawrence. Kansas weather: generally fair tonight and Thursday with a slowly rising temperature.
Lawrence Bar Association and Advisory Board faced a surge of 25 to 30 people seeking questionnaire help. Delays were linked to yesterday’s holiday and lawyers’ long court shifts from 8 to 2. Most attendees had not answered any questions before arriving.
Congressman Ed C. Little announces an early January examination to select two young men for West Point and Annapolis appointments. Applicants must provide a physician’s health statement, three citizen letters attesting character and citizenship, be between 16 and 20 for Annapolis or 18 and 22 for West Point, and may be tested in Algebra and Geometry.
Southwest citizens joined the American Red Cross in a Christmas membership drive, with officials optimistic the total could reach 3.5 million or more. Johnston and Lebraume cited solid regional support, noting 3.25 million as a conservative base and reports from Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas. The drive aimed to boost Allied war effort and boost morale in France.
A mid week Rotary luncheon at the Elks Club discussed patriotic conduct and aiding soldiers families. Plans include wheatless meals to save funds for charity and a Kansas City Rotarians meeting attendance. Kent praised the recreation house project for soldiers and cited Army data on social disease rates, noting improvements at Camp Funston.

The North Side Methodist Church held a Christmas program featuring a service flag gift by Wallace Palmateer and his wife. The flag honors fifteen members who joined military service and Fol Stover in France with the Rainbow Division. The Haskell Band joined Christmas Eve carolers to serenade new Red Cross members from 10 to 12 pm. After the performance, Mr A P Hults treated the band to chili and hot coffee and paid their street car fares.
A union prayer meeting will be held tonight at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Ross W. Sanderson of the Congregational Church will speak on The Challenge of the Un finished. The services are part of church plans to conserve coal during the fuel short age.
Reverend R. E. Gillham of North Lawrence Missouri was found dead Sunday morning at Forstell. The family believes natural causes. His body will be brought home for burial and funeral services may be held in a couple days. Gillham was a presiding elder in the district where he died. Ed Parsons and Al Witt are noted names among local Red Cross members.
Kansas food administrator Walter P. Innes urges all stores, farmers, and ice companies to store ice this winter due to a looming ammonia shortage used in ice manufacture. He warns ice prices may rise next summer and stresses ice storage supports the food program and shipability of foods.
In Wichita on December 26, thirty three industrial workers held in the local jail rioted all night smashing cells and making noise. Sheriff reports clothing removed and the water cure threat by the fire department loomed if unrest continued. The detainees, captured in Artler County oil fields by federal agents on charges of plotting against the government and advising resistance to the draft, face U.S. Court trials in March.
Lawrence High School posts a display in Nes Innes Bullene and Hackman store listing 153 alumni serving in the military. The roll includes John H. Albach Joseph Alford Arthur Anderson Austin Bailey Mark Beach and many others plus nurses Margaret Bullene Nellie Kuhn Evadne Laptad Marjorie Templin Pauline Richardson and faculty John A. Reber James L. Sellers.
The Senate Military Affairs Committee voted to urge Secretary of War to verify and fix winter gear gaps in national army camps. It cites shortages of 20,000 overcoats and 47,000 woolen blouses across nine camps and orders direct purchases near camps if needed. The panel also asks to check other camps for similar deficits and suspend routine if faster sourcing is possible.
CAN STILL JOIN Navy Kansas City Mo Dec 26 Many inquiries have come to the main recruiting station here as tech registered men can enlist since the government's announcement of the closing of acceptance of volunteers is answered in the affirmative by Lieutenant Ralph B Campbell aide to Commodore J M Orchard in charge of the station Not only are registered men acceptable here but the navy is anxious to them especially if they are skilled along certain lines Any registered man who prefers the navy to the army or feels that his experience and training particularly qualify him for positions in the navy will be able to attain if he joined the national army should at once take steps to see what enlistment in the navy would mean for him Before traveling to a recruiting office however he should obtain his local registration board a certificate reading This is to certify that Name Order No Class No is not needed for any current quota from this district It should be signed by the that reign or secretary of the local board Of course in district where there has been little volunteering and difficulty in filling quotas the registration boards may be reluctant to issue such certificates but in most instances appreciate the fact that a man is b orely seeking another branch of service and gladly give them We are accepting men with such certificates right along
The American steamship Tuscarora and her 35 crew members are believed lost at sea. Advices from Nova Scotia indicate the vessel, requisitioned by the US Shipping Board for Atlantic service, may have vanished near an offshore island.
