Lawrence police investigated a break-in at Berndt & James Liquor Store 846 N. The theft occurred between 1 and 8 a.m. Thursday with two bricks breaking a glass door. Vernon D. James reported the incident as liquor stock went missing pending inventory.
The 24 hour Christmas truce in Vietnam ended with over fifty South Vietnamese killed and nine American paratroopers killed. One American was wounded after an artillery mishap at a U S camp near Hue. Specialist Behm described tending a wounded paratrooper as the unit endured the attack.
A two car collision on U S 50 one mile west of Strong City left Laurence M. McCart 39 of Columbia Missouri dead and two relatives injured Judith Metcalf 24 of Kansas City escaped injury in the second car as Kansas began its highway toll counts during the Christmas weekend.
A local stained glass craft shop near River City Records at 1401 Massachusetts stayed busy ahead of Christmas before closing on Christmas Eve. Chavez is released from Monterey County Jail after the California Supreme Court agrees to hear his appeal in a contempt conviction tied to ending the UFWOC boycott of Bud Antle Inc.

Mrs. Dora Kasson of Hawthorne Calif died Thursday in a Burbank hospital on her 90th birthday. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Monday at Chapel of the Chimes Inglewood with burial in Inglewood Cemetery. She was born December 24 1880 in Warrensburg Missouri and lived in Douglas County Kansas from 1928 to 1941 before moving to Hawthorne. She is survived by a daughter Fern Long and five sons Orville Norman Glendon Marvin and Wendell Kasson plus a brother in Canada and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. An elephants life span is 45 years with occasional 60 year olds.
Eugen Beihl the West German consul kidnapped December 1 by Basque terrorists was released today announced by Basque spokesman at a news conference in Saint Jean de Luz France Beihl in good health and somewhere in Europe the captors demanded nothing in return for his freedom The Basques had threatened Beihl linked to the Burgos trial of 16 ETA suspects with verdict expected Saturday and heavy sentences sought for murder and terrorism charges tied to the Basque conflict

A chimney fire at 2 12 a m at 800 Ohio street belonging to Glenn Reade prompted a response by the Lawrence Fire Department with no damage. A separate grass and trash fire on Union Pacific tracks near Sixth and Maple was extinguished at 2 24 p m Thursday with no damage.
