London reports a peaceful Christmas Day with no bombing raids or air activity over Britain. Officials noted no enemy action during daylight and none last night while anti aircraft crews stood by and civilians sheltered. Christmas scenes showed carols in basements and rural safety relocations continuing.
Berlin reports a Christmas pause in British and German bombardment. However a German speedboat sunk a 2,500 ton British ship December 23, with two other ships already credited. The communique notes fires visible after an attack on Manchester, and that Luftwaffe did not attack December 24 and 25. Pope Pius XII hopes for a bombing truce.
A low level dive bombing attack on Valona Albania hit the airfield of the Italian port entry, leaving the airstrip enveloped in palls of black smoke, according to a British Royal Air Force report dated December 25.7.
The British freighter Everleigh reported being shelled by a submarine about 650 miles west of the northern tip of Scotland. A Mackay radio distress signal gave the vessel's position at latitude 58.36 north, longitude 21.58 west, with a 5,222-ton burden. Built in 1980, the Everleigh is owned by the Atlantic Shipping and Trading Company and homeported in London.
A robber at a Chicago filling station threatened owner William Rossner with a gun and fled after paying with a $5 bill. Rossner secured the robber’s cash and kept the change, then watched him drive away without the coins.
School nurse Miss Electa Kindlenperger will travel to Wichita on Monday December 30 to attend a Kansas State Nurses association board of directors meeting. She will discuss ways to aid in the defense program.
Bethlehem Palestine December 25 Thousands of khaki clad British soldiers joined pilgrims at the Church of the Nativity for a wartime Christmas mass. Blackout lighting muted the scene as troops from Britain Australia New Zealand Czech Polish and free French knelt in prayer for comrades in the western desert. A multinational crowd sang chorals in the courtyard under a starlit sky.
Washington reports indicate President Roosevelt may ask Congress for authority to bring independent quasi judicial agencies under executive control in a new reorganization plan. Senators McCarran and Barkley weigh potential moves and impacts on congressional oversight and efficiency.
Three typewriters were stolen from the city library last night. A janitor said the thief unlocked a north window before closing at 6 o clock and returned later to enter. The window was found open when staff arrived this morning.
Firemen were called early this morning to 726 Walnut Street to extinguish a blaze in a car owned by Richard Newman. Chief Paul Ingela said the motor backfired starting the fire in the carburetor. No damage resulted.

At the Armory about 20 soldiers attend the Christmas dinner, while Haskell shows five Battery E men taking leaves leaving 111 for the big meal. Menus include turkey and trimmings. Armory meal around 2 30 pm, regular mess at noon, sack lunches to follow. Returning troops continue preparations for Camp Robinson and remaining physical exams.
The Salvation Army handed out 128 Christmas baskets yesterday afternoon containing a chicken cans of fruit and vegetables apples potatoes flour sugar bread and other items. Capt. and Mrs Brigman closed the Hall today and left for Hutchinson for a two day visit with relatives. They took their two children. The Hall will be closed today and tomorrow.
Hollywood, Dec. 25. Joe E. Brown and his wife renewed vows in a church ceremony at St. Thomas to add a second wedding 25 years after their New York municipal building marriage. Don Brown gave away the bride and Joe L. Brown was best man as Mary Elizabeth and Kathryn Frances served as flower girls.
In Coffeyville Kansas on Christmas Day 1930 veteran social worker Tom Turner will serve homeless people a Christmas dinner. A list of contributors to the meal omitted a name and added two extra chickens. A reporter traced Ingmire entries in the phone directory. none owned up to a chicken gift but two Ingmires said they were willing to supply chickens.

A light earthquake at 9 30 a m shook decorations on Helena Montana’s Christmas trees with no damage reported.

Charles Flory an 81 year old resident was found in the street near his home at Ninth and New York streets at 7 49 last night. He was in a critical condition at Memorial hospital with head impact and unknown witnesses. Lawrence Stutz of Lawrence was later brought to the same hospital with a head laceration.
Ten inmates at the county jail enjoyed a Christmas meal featuring roast chicken with dressing gravy mashed potatoes carrots peas cranberry sauce celery pumpkin pie and coffee.
Washington December 25. Burton G Cowles superintendent of the dead letter office reports wide civic charity support for Santa letters. Thousands of letters from children are collected nationwide and sent to institutions aiding needy kids for Christmas gifts based on what they request and their home situations. Many letters miss addresses as children trust Santa implicitly.
State highway commission will cover half the cost of paving the remaining three blocks on South Massachusetts Street in Lawrence. The city’s share is estimated at about $17,500 from a total of $35,000. Plans call for a 46 foot wide concrete pavement from Twentieth to Twenty-Third, with funding via bonds or WPA aid and city council details to be worked out.
