Shoppers rush last minute errands on Christmas Eve as Lawrence and Douglas County offices close for the holiday. No mail, many closures include museums, banks, service stations, schools, and county facilities.
Lawrence Kansas has been named an official bicentennial community by the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration two months after forming its Bicentennial Commission. The city will receive a certificate and national flag in January, with activities launching on Kansas Day January 29 including a weekly Colonial Clothing Day led by local planners.
A 35 foot wooden Christmas tree used by Bethel Assembly of God Church collapsed during a carol performance in Wichita. One 41 year old man died of internal injuries and 34 others were injured with nine still hospitalized in fair to good condition. The structure fell as the audience cheered the final song and the Nativity scene was toppled. Church members speculated that weight shift during the bow may have triggered the collapse.
Lawrence police arrested Albert L. Wright after a fire set to burn insulation off copper wire led to a burglary and larceny probe. Wright, 26, of 1401 N. Third, was booked in Douglas County Jail on four counts of burglary and larceny and one count of grand theft and released on 5000 bond. Police recovered more than 1000 in copper wire from a University of Kansas Building and Grounds theft and seized chain saws and tow bars linked to prior burglaries as part of a 27-item haul. The investigation continues.
Concord New Hampshire AP Nomination papers filing confirms President Ford’s entry into the states early presidential race. Rep James C Cleveland R N H chairs Ford campaign saying they will run a solid campaign and avoid over optimism. Cleveland notes Ford had to enter the Feb 24 New Hampshire primary to avoid misinterpretation.
The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service projects 1976 wheat output at 327.50 million bushels, the third largest in state history despite poor fall moisture. National forecast hints at a possibly second largest winter wheat harvest, around 1.5 billion bushels, though not assured.
The U.S. Court of Appeals delayed ruling on a rate increase. Judge John J. Sirica had blocked a Sunday rise from 10 to 13 cents for the first ounce. Arguments are now set for Monday, delaying any change in first-class letter postage.
Secretary Kissinger told a news conference that congressional anger over U.S. support in Angola could invite Soviet military moves elsewhere and threaten détente. He argued limited U.S. involvement and outlined steps to curb Soviet aid while noting current funds of 8.2 million dollars remain for anti-Soviet factions in Angola amid strong congressional opposition to further spending.
The city weighed health insurance arrangements with United and planned options for employees while Lawrence Aviation seeks a 10 year lease extension to secure an SBA loan of 320000 to settle debts and buy new equipment. The airport board will be consulted before a decision. A property at 1319 Pa is on the market with unpaid repairs and no power or sewer hookup, hindering eligibility for a housing rehabilitation grant.
Two men treated after incidents in Lawrence were listed in improved condition at LMH. Kenneth Hapney, 63, from Kansas City, was in fair condition due to exposure after spending the night at Clinton Reservoir. Raymond Smith, a construction worker, was in fairly good condition after a 15 foot fall at the Helen Foresman Spencer Art Museum and facial fractures.
