A masked mob seized Marlon Tyler from the Scottsburg jail after midnight, ventilating the scene with guns and taking him to an unguarded spot where he was killed. Tyler, jailed weeks earlier for an assault on his wife and a failed suicide attempt, had attacked his wife and shot her before, prompting the clash that led to his death.
A scattered dispatch reports clear weather east of the Rockies and cloudy conditions from the south Pacific to Montana. Two hundred soldiers discharged from the Twentieth infantry at Leavenworth Kansas on December 24 plan to re enlist for the Manila trip. The regiment ordered to the Philippines expects to depart for San Francisco January 10. In Columbus James Mc Collough a drayman shot and killed J J Gurry over a long feud. Gurry attacked Mc Collough while he worked in a coal car. Mc Collough is married to a 28 year old and a soldier of the recent war.
Kansas City dispatch reports Senator Jones would resign as chair of the national Democratic Party committee to allow Col. William J Bryan to pursue his own expansion plan, fearing party repudiation. Bryan promises study and a public address if he shifts views. The text includes garbled excerpts and mentions funds for a pavilion hospital and various political notes.
In Topeka on December 54 the special session made little progress as populist lawmakers mapped work. The railroad bill was set for its first reading and a second on Monday, with a skeleton version advancing before the real bill. Changes awarded to the committee include electing railroad commissioners at large for four year terms and aligning their service with presidential years, while a railroad court and board composition remain under discussion.
Ada Cranahan Norton, linked to the Cary literary family, operates a small gristmill in Hightstown New Jersey. Since her husband's death three years ago she runs it alone, drawing corn from farmers within ten miles. Her mill features a water wheel housed inside the building to prevent freezing in winter.
In Topeka on December 24 the defense for John Collins featured Charles Hayden of Holton arguing Collins’s good character and moral upbringing as contradicting guilt. A.P. Jesmore, county attorney, rebutted by detailing the motive alleged from Collins’s actions and love for Miss Babcock.
