Draft categories listed for induction as war toll rises

An official outlined six draft categories in order of call as of Nov. 30. Delinquents, volunteers and 1-A and 1-A-D conscientious objectors fill the pool, with 137 1-As available and 65 366 unexamined. about half fail tests. Other groups include not readily available 1-A and 1-A-O, childless married men 19 to 28, men 26 to 35 with deferments, and those aged 18 to 19.

Burglars Burn Way Into Clifton Bank Vault

Clifton Kansas First National Bank of Clifton was robbed Wednesday night as burglars used acetylene torches to cut into the vault and rifled safety deposit boxes. Vice president Frank Pfister said the amount stolen is undetermined though a small cash sum was taken. investigators from Clay Washington counties along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and FBI were called in. It was the bank’s first burglary in 88 years.

KU Alum Group Chooses Slate For Alumni Board

Members of the Kansas University Alumni Association nominating committee met Wednesday at KU to select six candidates for election to the association board of directors. The six names will be announced in January, with three elected to five year terms by mail. Committee members include Roy A. Edwards Jr. of Kansas City Lewis H. Brotherson of Kansas City Clarence G. Sylvia Hurwitz Dies After Lengthy Illness

Sylvia P. Hurwitz 60 of Kansas City Missouri died Wednesday at Menorah Medical Center after years of ill health. Washington AP House Republican Leader Gerald L Ford says the draft call should not be used for punitive purposes. He urges Selective Service to supply only military manpower and that any law violations be punished by regular statutes. Two Kansas Jail Escapees Captured by Oklahoma Police

In Manchester Oklahoma two escapees from Kingman County Kansas jail were captured. Charles Hilliker 25 was arrested at the Manchester schoolhouse. Gary Stalder 27 was caught after a Kansas highway patrolman fired at his fleeing car. Stalder surrendered without resistance.

Merriam Chosen for Lecture Program at KU

Dr. Merriam of the State Geological Survey at Kansas University has been named one of the lecturers for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists continuing education program. The program includes 29 scientists and 11 twelve hour class sessions. Pr John W Harbaugh of Stanford University also selected. He holds KU B S and MS degrees and often works on Geological Survey tasks at KU.

County Courthouse to Close Friday for Christmas Holiday

Douglas County Court house will close Friday as part of the Christmas holiday. Christmas is a legal county holiday and since it falls this year on Saturday, the commissioners voted to close a day early. City Hall also will be closed and most Civil Service employees have been given Friday off.

Lawrence Increases Geographical Size In 1965

City Planner Ken Thompson announced 287.4 acres were annexed in 1965, expanding Lawrence to a total of 5,950 acres and about 9.3 square miles. The growth reflects the city’s expanded geographic footprint based on official figures.
