Chicago poised to top New York in homicides this year

With under two weeks left, Chicago nears New York in murders, 648 vs 619, despite fewer residents. Homicides rise from 629 in 2000, while national death sentences fell from 272 in 1999 to 214 in 2000, cited by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Prosecution notes include the Hanover case where Hall and Susanne Zantop were slain, with Robert Tulloch and James Parker charged. Parker pleaded guilty as an accomplice and Tulloch, invoking insanity, heads to trial in April.
