Rubbermaid lays off workers at Winfield plants before Christmas
Newell Rubbermaid orders a broad layoff at its Winfield Kansas plants just before Christmas. About 200 to 250 workers were told they will not be rehired and benefits including health and retirement may end. Schedules shift to eight hours with overtime eliminated and the Wheat Road plant will operate weekdays only. The company had 804 employees in September, down from 856 in April, and had received a $100,000 retraining grant earlier this year.

Suit claims Station Games rigged license process in Missouri
Fitzgeralds Sugar Creek Inc. sues Station Casinos Inc. in Jackson County Circuit Court alleging improper contacts between former Missouri Gaming Commission chairman Robert Wolfson and Michael Lazaroff helped Station win a prelicensing investigation and gaming license for a Kansas City area casino. The suit follows Station’s sale of Missouri riverboats to Ameristar Casinos for 488 million after the commission fined Station and earlier approved the deal amid a yearlong dispute over payments tied to Lazaroff's case. Fitzgeralds, once a contender for the Sugar Creek project, argues the illegal communications rigged the outcome against them, as they pursued a 145 million development near La Benite Park.
