Lawrence High threat author identified as hoax

Lawrence Police identified Monday the 18 year old student who scrawled a threatening note at Lawrence High School. The note referenced Columbine style violence but detectives say the threat was a hoax and there is no evidence of a planned attack. The student faces suspension proceedings and could face charges later. investigation continues.

Douglas County fears cuts to probation supervision

Douglas County officials warn that state budget cuts proposed for next year could reduce supervision for paroles and probations. Deputy director Pat Berry notes the plan would cut two of four community corrections supervisor positions and end electronic home detention surveillance funding. Kansas Corrections Secretary Chuck Simmons confirms significant funding reductions to meet a 6 percent state cut, with Douglas County facing about $59,000 in losses across grants. Clinton to set tougher pollution rules for new cars and SUVs

President Clinton will announce stricter emissions for new cars including SUVs and light trucks. The plan targets a 90 percent cut in tailpipe smog pollutants by the next decade and requires SUVs and light trucks to meet car standards. Refiners would cut sulfur in gasoline by 90 percent to 30 ppm, with diesel sulfur also restricted. The rules, effective 2004 for model cars, aim to curb asthma and respiratory illnesses while raising vehicle costs modestly.
