Staple Singers Patriarch Pops Staples Dies at 84
Roebuck Pops Staples, patriarch of the Staple Singers, died Tuesday at age 84 after a recent concussion from a fall near his suburban Dalton Illinois home. The group rose in the 1960s with gospel and social change music and scored hits including I'll Take You There, Respect Yourself, Heavy Makes You Happy and If You're Ready Come Go With Me.

Curtain falls on flutist leading Carnegie Hall tenure
Carnegie Hall announced the resignation of Franz Xaver Ohnesorg, the executive and artistic director, effective August 31, after a stormy two year tenure. The 52 year old flutist will join the Berlin Philharmonic in September, following a controversial period marked by staff departures and an anonymous critical letter. Ohnesorg led a $65 million expansion to add a third venue as he departs with high praise from Isaac Stern and Sanford Weill.
