Bennett warns of farm crisis unless Carter acts

Wheat crop in good condition across Kansas

The 1978 Kansas wheat crop remains in good to excellent condition with little change from the prior week. Winds caused some blowing dust but minimal damage. moisture is short in western counties while elsewhere it is mostly adequate. About 15 percent of the crop is pastured this winter, above last year but near a decade average, and harvest of raw crops is nearly complete except in a few northeastern counties.

Terrorist suspects arrested near Swiss border in gunfight

German couple believed on West Germany list of wanted terrorists was captured after a shootout with Swiss customs officers at Fahy border checkpoint. The man Willy Peter Stoll and woman Juliane Plambeck were identified with ties to the Schleyer kidnapping and the Lorenz murder. Both officers were wounded.

Tonganoxie approves higher trash fees and drainage work

Tonganoxie City Council approved a contract with Saladin Disposal Co. raising the monthly trash fee from 3.05 to 3.35 dollars. Of the new total, 3.25 goes to Saladin and 10 cents to the city. Residents along Church and Washington Streets heard about drainage work to start today. The council also authorized the municipal judge pro tem to preside in the city court when the judge is absent.
