Police Car Damaged In Early Morning Collision

A 1972 Lawrence police cruiser, driven by Detective William M. McCaffrey, was rear ended by Kenneth R. Pickens on West 23rd Street. McCaffrey and three passengers had minor injuries. cars valued at 1000 and 1500 dollars respectively were damaged. Police also investigated ten other weekend crashes with injuries in two.

Planning agenda includes Penn House permit and service station site plan

The Lawrence City Commission planned two planning items on Tuesday including a special use permit for Penn House at 1035 Pa and a site plan for an 23rd and Haskell service station. Also on the agenda a JC Penney wall sign variance and a new ordinance on site plan regulations may be discussed.

City Commission meets to receive bids for street and storm sewer work for Holiday Hills No 10. It weighs sidewalk construction in Indian Hills, a sign ordinance variance for J C Penney, park and boat facilities near the water plant, and traffic safety with stop signs on Lyons streets. Also reviews health, sanitary sewers, lighting layout for Holcom, planning items, temporary use changes, site plan rules, and malt beverage license claims.

Jaycee Christmas Light Contest Sees 25 Entries

Law rence Jaycees contest chair Kelly Mathis reports 25 entries tabulated with 30 to 35 expected. Mail-in entries counted today. deadline was Friday. Nine prizes to be awarded by three judges between 7 and 11 p.m. Tuesday with winners announced Wednesday and prizes distributed before Christmas.

State meat inspection favored by Missouri lieutenant governor

Lt. Gov. William E. Morris announced he favors continuing Missouri s State Meat Inspection Program rather than turning it over to the federal government. Gov. Warren E. Hearnes had proposed federal takeover to cut costs. Agriculture Commissioner Dexter D. Davis would comply with the governor while privately backing the state program. Morris opposes the plan, arguing no advantage to Missourians or livestock producers from federal inspection.

Baby Delivers Sermonless Sunday in Pamlico

The Rev. Sam Truitt paused his sermon when a front door message told him his wife was in labor. He left to drive her to the hospital, where Mrs. Truitt gave birth to a seven pound boy.

Two Men Fined For Drug Sale

In Douglas County Court two young men received suspended three year sentences and $500 fines for attempted sale of marijuana. Steven W. Rippert, 21, of 841 Maine, and Douglas J. Taub, 20, of 1614 Ky., were arrested during drug raids following information gathered by investigators.

Harold Evans Dies at 73 in Larned Kansas

Harold C. Hal Evans longtime editor of the Larned Tiller and Toiler died in a nursing home at 73 after a long illness. The veteran journalist retired from active work last March after 27 years as editor and was author of the popular column 5050.

Cake X-rayed for metal bits in Christmas cake

Mrs Lesley Croome of London had her Christmas cake x rayed after the electric mixer exploded. Doctors found metal bits and the cake was operated on to remove them. She considers the hospital bill of 10 40 pounds worth the service.
