U N Security Council seeks Syrian cease fire
The United Nations Security Council backed talks between Bashar al Assad's government and opposition groups and a cease fire in Syria's civil war. The resolution omits any decision on Assad's future. Delegates in New York heard calls to stop the killing as 250000 died and millions fled, fueling a European migrant crisis. US Secretary of State Kerry urged action while a separate group of envoys sought stronger moves against Islamic State. Russia and Iran support Assad, while the West backs rebels. China warned progress must be irreversible. Putin said Syrians should choose their leader, with terrorists eliminated first. US concerns cited about militant targeting and the need for an inclusive post Assad government.
