Chimp Set To Soar Next As Space Capsule Flight

Cape Canaveral reports a successful unmanned test of the man in space capsule 130 miles high. It was recovered intact 235 miles down-range near Grand Bahama Island after a 16 minute 4000 mph flight atop an 83 foot Redstone missile. NASA declares the test a pivotal step toward sending the first American astronaut aloft within months.

Fire Engulfs Carrier Constellation Killing Dozens

A massive blaze aboard the aircraft carrier Constellation in New York left at least 20 dead and hundreds injured as water was poured aboard for hours. The ship listed to port and crews fought the flames amid freezing weather and smoke reaching 700 feet.

D Day for Taxes Here Tuesday in County

Tuesday marks the deadline for first half personal property tax payments. Land payments must arrive by 4 p.m. and mail postmarks before midnight. Officials, led by treasurer Bessie Bennett, expect awhile line at the courthouse and urge use of mail payments to speed the process. After Tuesday the full tax bill becomes due with interest, and 1961 vehicle license tags go on sale January 3 with options for low-number reservations at the courthouse or by mail using state mail cards.

Snow Fall In Lawrence Forecast For Tonight And Tuesday

Occasional snow flurries and much colder temperatures are expected in Lawrence tonight and Tuesday. The city last saw six inches of snow a week ago Sunday, with record lows around five degrees reached last Tuesday. Temperatures are predicted to dip further as a northwest cold air movement continues, with lows in the 20s and highs near 25 to 30 Tuesday.

State Electors Cast Votes For Nixon In Kansas

Kansas eight Republican electors cast their ballots for Richard M. Nixon for president and Lodge for vice president. Postmaster James Parsons warns mailers to finish early to avoid delays as Lawrence Post Office hits peak parcel post day and surpasses 1959 figures. In first 15 days of December the office handled over two million pieces. parcel post rose 22 000 from 1959. Air mail urged for distant cards. Canada and Mexico require a four cent stamp for first two ounces.

Phase two apartments start at Southridge Plaza Lawrence

The second phase of the Southridge Plaza project in Lawrence will begin in February or March with two new apartment buildings. Total units will reach 160 by September, with plans for continued expansion as University growth and city development push demand. A swimming pool will serve residents, slated for completion by June 1.

Tragedy Near Eudora Station Claims Brubeck Family

Lawrence man John Brubeck 40 and his daughter Pamela 11 died when their car was struck by Santa Fe passenger train No. 124 near the Cooperative Farm Chemicals plant. Five other family members were hospitalized with injuries. the mother and four daughters survived in fair to good condition.
