On December 18 1865 the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery took effect following a declaration by Secretary of State William Seward. In 1892 Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker premiered in St Petersburg. In 1944 two Supreme Court rulings upheld wartime relocation of Japanese Americans but allowed loyal citizens to avoid detention. In 1957 Shippingport Nuclear Plant began commercial operation in Pennsylvania, later retired in 1982. In 1972 US began heavy bombing of North Vietnam, ending 11 days later.
