COPS AND SHOPPERS Aidful law officers help kids shop for gifts
More than a dozen youngsters received escorts Friday morning as they shopped for gifts for their families at Walmart in Lawrence. The fifth annual Take Our Youth Shopping event was organized by Douglas County Sheriff's Office officials led by Capt. Doug Woods. Children, ages three and four, interacted with Lt. Stacy Simmons and local detectives as they posed for photos and selected items.

County leaders marked the completion of renovations to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence with an open house in the new meeting hall. About 50 people attended as rain fell outside, and County Commissioner Jim Flory praised the space and its early use within the broader improvements at 2120 Harper Street.
