Doctor Edelin manslaughter conviction overturned

Massachusetts Supreme Court voided the manslaughter verdict against Dr. Kenneth C. Edelin in the 1973 abortion case. The court said he lacked criminal intent and that the fetus died before birth, reversing his 1975 conviction. Edelin, an obstetrician at Boston City Hospital, faced the 20 to 24 week fetus death charge.

Lawrence Basic Adult Education ends first semester

The Lawrence program wrapped up its first semester with a Christmas party. ESL students performed a fashion show and sang Silent Night in five languages Japanese Chinese Vietnamese Polish and Spanish. Twenty two students passed the GED test this semester.

Two Boys Drown While Playing on Ice Near Seminary

In Kansas City Missouri two brothers James Lester Robinson 13 and Kevin Lee Robinson 9 drowned after venturing onto an ice covered lake by the Midwest Baptist Theological Seminary. A pregnant woman tried to rescue them but failed. Local authorities recovered the bodies about three hours later from 15 feet of water.

Water district completes rural pipeline project

The Rural Water District No. pipeline distribution system is finished and operational. Cost near 1 million dollars. The system covers Lawrence south to Lone Star and Clinton Reservoir, extends into Franklin County beyond U.S. 56. Cronister Brothers of Pittsburg completed the job in 500 days, three phases are now active. A February district meeting will discuss any issues.

KU names David Hardcastle dean of School of Social Welfare

David Hardcastle associate professor of social welfare at Kansas University has been named dean of the KU School of Social Welfare, effective July 1. He succeeds Theodore Ernst who resigned in April. Arthur Katz serves as acting dean. Hardcastle previously acted as dean in 1974 75 and was associate dean from 1974 to 1976. He holds degrees from Fresno State UC Berkeley and Case Western Reserve.

Fatzer Arrest Report Released At Dallas Airport

The Kansas Supreme Court chief justice Harold Fatzer was arrested at Dallas Fort Worth Airport on November 21 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after witnesses saw him at Braniff Airways gate using loud abusive language. He was taken to Grapevine jail and released the same day. The incident prompted comments from Fatzer and officials, with Kansas and Texas authorities reviewing the case and constitutional implications for removal of justices.

Bennett to propose funding for public TV

Gov. Robert Bennett announced a 1977 legislative plan to fund public television to serve unserved areas in southwestern northwestern and southeastern Kansas using existing institutions. He will seek enough money to expand service to Topeka Wichita Kansas City area stations and a Missouri station serving eastern Kansas. He will also back Kansas meat inspection funding and focus his budget message on water energy and health care after a statewide listening tour.

Bids Opened on K-10 Paving Final Leg Between Lawrence and KC

An Overland Hark company was the apparent low bidder Thursday for paving the last 7.28 miles of the K-10 bypass from east of Lawrence to the Douglas Johnson line. Reno Construction bid 2 616 288, under N R Hamm Perry 2 665 520. The contract is to be awarded next week by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Space concerns flagged at KUMC during Joint Commission visit

A three member panel from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals spent two days at Kansas University Medical Center offering praise for patient care nursing and records while noting space related deficiencies. Executive vice chancellor Dr. Robert Kugel said issues include equipment kept in halls and lab space shortages. The panel will draft a formal report with a possible one or two year accreditation term. current accreditation is for one year.
