City to study pay scale with $25 000 contract
City commissioners plan a 25000 dollar contract with FED Consulting Inc to study the city payroll system for about 700 full-time employees. The review aims to update pay classes since 1995 and compare with other cities while budget limits limit immediate raises. The study, due to finish in June, includes a 20 member compensation team and could influence future consistency in emergencies and police pay.

Santas carved at Ken McGovern's house become stress relief
Douglas County sheriff captain Ken McGovern spends hours in his basement woodshop carving hand crafted Santa Claus figures from bass wood. The wooden Santas, ranging from three feet to a few inches, are often gifted to friends and family with only a few sold. McGovern, a 20 year sheriff’s office veteran, started after his father Harald encouraged woodwork. He notes faces are the hardest part and says carving provides relaxation away from daily duties.
