Judge sends voter citizenship lawsuit back to federal election officials
A federal judge sent back to the U S Election Assistance Commission a request by Kansas and Arizona to modify the national voter registration form to require proof of U S citizenship. Judge Eric Melgren gave the commission until January 17 to act but kept the case open. He questioned the commission’s ability to decide with no quorum since 2010 and noted the Justice Department argues changes would affect nationwide policy. The states seek birth certificates or passports for voter registration, a move the DOJ says creates barriers and could set a nationwide precedent.
