Kansas to shift focus from new prison to community corrections

The Kansas Legislature's Interim Committee on Corrections recommended 14 bills to the 1978 session aiming to reduce inmate numbers at Lansing and Hutchinson facilities by expanding community based corrections. The plan includes four pilot programs costing about 1.6 million and three permanent honor camps near Clinton Lake Turtle Creek El Dorado reservoirs costing about 1 million each.

KU fire training discusses fire and arson concepts

Nearly 100 attendees at a three day Kansas University continuing education session heard how fires start and burn with oxygen or water and how arson investigators gather evidence. Speakers explained indicators of ignition sources and the role of observation in preserving fire scenes for investigation.

Christmas mailers running a bit late at Lawrence posts

Postmaster Jack Harris says Christmas mailers are arriving later this year slowing post office business. He notes international deliveries cannot be guaranteed and domestic mail should allow a week for delivery. Fire damages car on KU campus as battery explodes

Firefighters said a battery under the hood of a parked 1974 car exploded around 1 15 a m on Gower Place near the Kansas University campus causing an estimated 200 damage. Investigators noted hoses and a plastic radiator covering burned. the vehicle was owned by Timothy Swanson a KU freshman from Wichita.

Fire traced to lighting in Providence dorm Nativity scene

A gooseneck lamp lighting a Nativity display in Aquinas Hall sparked a fast fire on the fourth floor of the Providence College dormitory. Seven women died as flames spread, with two jumping to their deaths and another saved. Fire officials said alarms functioned, but no sprinklers or fire escapes were in place.

Regents weigh private review of enrollment fee report

Five-vehicle crash ties Kawbridge traffic in Lawrence

A chain reaction on the Kansas River bridge north of downtown Lawrence halted traffic Tuesday evening as five cars collided. Police reported no serious injuries and estimated $1,750 in damage on three vehicles, while two others had no damage. Helen Boswell, 21, a KU junior from Lawrence, said she was the fifth car and could not stop in time.
