White House Tape Theory Questioned in Watergate Case
Technical experts after 150 man days cannot support the White House claim that a desk lamp and electric typewriter erased 18 minutes of a Watergate tape. They now focus on the Uber brand recorder used by Rose Mary Woods and warn recovery may be impossible if the recorder caused the gap. Judge Sirica noted the possibility if the recorder failed. Woods testified she may have erased minutes by pressing the wrong button. An official White House analysis suggested a low mood of the record button during review near the typewriter and lamp.
