Eastern storm drags on as new Southwest blizzard hits

The harsh arctic cold grips the East while a new blizzard lashes New Mexico and the Southwest. Death toll climbs past 200 and economic losses run in the millions as Governor Rockefeller orders National Guard to aid snow clearance in New York City. Snow blankets the Southwest and West Texas while the East endures continued travel delays and lingering frigid conditions.

Baker Vespers Set on Sunday at Baker University

Baker University presents its annual Christmas vespers twice Sunday at First Methodist Church Baldwin. The 80 voice choir directed by Dr. W C Rice rehearsed two months for the concert with 23 of 80 carols chosen by the repertoire class. Nine soloists and a men's trio feature in the program. Candles greenery wreaths and decor set the church nave for the event. over 400 invitations went to former Baker choir members.

Lunar Shot Is Held Up Today

CAPE CANAVERAL Florida AP technical trouble today forced at least a one day postponement of a launch of an American spacecraft toward an intended lunar orbit. The 388 pound craft would have been the first lunar satellite carrying electronics for extensive study of the moon environment. The countdown on the 98 foot Atlas Able booster progressed to within seven minutes of liftoff before the attempt was called off. NASA reported only that technical difficulties prevented the launch.

17 Year Old Girl Escapes Abductors After Ride Home

Hazel Irene Oelrich, 17, daughter of a Sultan banker, fled two abductors in Everett after being taken earlier from Sultan. She called her parents, escaped in a stolen 10 year old car, and headed back toward Sultan as FBI and sheriff’s deputies pursued. Authorities secured the safe return and continued inquiries into the case.
