Lawrence city plan to curb downtown nightlife by zoning for 50 percent food sales for any new alcohol venues drew strong pushback from bar owners who say the rule is unfair and misdirected. Existing taverns would be exempted, but several owners contacted over the weekend oppose the change.
City commission weighs a zoning rule requiring new alcohol serving venues to earn at least half their profits from food. Bar owners cite crime and litter concerns and urge careful language and public hearings before the measure returns to the commission for approval. Lawrence school board reduces five options to one feasible boundary plan while promising flexibility. The main proposal would shift enrollments to Sunflower School with five facilities receiving relief, including Quail Run and Hillcrest. A variant could raise Sunflower's initial enrollment from 308 to 376. The board, facing growth on the east and west sides, will continue study sessions and public forums through August 1994.
