Topeka Dec 18 AP State Auditor Will J French refused a 5000 transfer from a University of Kansas library appropriation to complete the new auditorium. Regents and Governor Paulian had approved the transfer but French ruled the library funds are a specific appropriation not subject to general transfer laws. He noted actions may be brought in the state supreme court to test transfer statutes.
Forecast shows mostly fair weather tonight and Wednesday but colder tonight with rain or mist in Kansas cities including Wichita Ottawa Pittsburg Arkansas City Salina and Dodge City. Roads vary from good in Salina to slippery in Kansas City Ottawa and Topeka areas with fog or mist and cloudy conditions elsewhere.
John S Berger a Los Angeles exposition promoter filed a $300000 damage suit against Charles P Taft county prosecutor in common pleas court. The suit arises from allegations in an indictment charging Berger with obtaining Rimesh as a witness for George Remus who faces murder trial. Berger claims Taft repeated alterations of the indictment in a newspaper interview. He acts for himself but will hire several prominent attorneys.
A Lawrence community Christmas committee called for donations of nuts candy canned fruit vegetables clothing and money to expand the Christmas check program. Gifts may be left at the welfare department city hall or picked up by calling 461. Checks should be payable to the Community Christmas Fund and mailed to city hall. D Funk is donations chair for residential areas and L Ne Le represents the business district. Camp Fire Girls will hold a charity sale on Massachusetts Street Saturday. The committee urged early contributions to speed up preparations for the Christmas celebration. Abe Heeeka is chair for the event.
Henry L. Stimson of New York was picked by President Coolidge to be Governor General of the Philippines, succeeding the late General Leonard Wood. The choice marks a shift from military to civilian administration, with Stimson expected to carry out Wood’s policies and Coolidge's aims while bringing long Republican leadership and Philippines knowledge.
Prof C S Skilton of the University school of fine arts, known for Indian music, will speak on The MacDowell Colony at Petersboro New Hampshire Wednesday afternoon at 3 o clock at a MacDowell tea meeting of the Mozart club of Kansas City. Prof W B Downing will sing Skilton compositions with Skilton at the piano. The event honors Edward MacDowell's birthday. Downing will perform Nocturne Depart and The Sea Lands. committees listed Washington and Lee.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh began a 2000 mile non stop flight from Bolling Field to Mexico City. He faced early altitude issues but proceeded after confirming weather and fuel plans. The White House and Mexican officials anticipated the journey as a sign of aviation expansion and commercial links.
Washington December 13 AP Colorado asked the Supreme Court for permission to sue Kansas and the Finney county water users association to test private individuals and others in Kansas may sue Colorado users of Arkansas river water in state courts. The petition notes the 1907 decision fixed the two states rights to river waters and says Kansas private suits would nullify that decision. Resume Work on Hotel Addition. Work on the addition to the Eldridge hotel was resumed today with forms for piers and first floor being built. contractor says work will be rushed as weather allows.
A northwest wind shift will bring a near thirty degree drop in temperature by tomorrow morning. Today’s low reached 60 degrees with light rain reported last night or this morning. Expect partly cloudy skies in Tanorraw.
A taxi meter dispute reached the city commission as a delegation led by John Riling urged repeal of the meter ordinance. Owners say meters are unfeasible because no 30 cent flag is used and rates would deter riders. They propose a cheaper tiered system with printed rate cards, while the commission considers a zoning plan and asks for a replacement proposal by the next meeting.
George Remus, famed bootlegger on trial for life, launched a vitriolic twenty minute address denouncing Charles P. Taft II and his aides as "novices" and alleging they used subterranean tactics. He threatened contempt charges and demanded the record be set in the Chambley case with Vernon R. Chambley arraignment. Chambley’s secretary was brought from Leavenworth on a habeas corpus writ to testify. the indictment stems from alleged false statements connected to Remus.
Postmaster C. B. Hosford said he believes the local post office building relief is in the deficiency bill but no definite word yet. He has heard that the local office is among the first to receive relief if approved, though $120,000 was allotted by the post office department and Congress has not authorized treasury to spend it. Plans and elevations for a north wing have been drawn pending the granted funds.
Jack Meinertz led a team to win the Liberty post Legion membership drive over a squad captained by Olin Fearing. Winners will be treated to a four person dinner planned for early January. An advertisement promotes buying a Chevrolet from Kent Ratio-Hannais.

The Dramatic Club presented The Commest a three act comedy by Philip Barry at the Orpheum to a full, enthusiastic audience. Richard Winslow and Nancy Blake were praised for their roles while the complete nine member cast received strong applause for clean humor and solid acting. The attractive stage setting and appropriate costumes added to the favorable reception, with a repeat performance scheduled for 8 20 tonight at the Orpheum.
G C Robertson former president of Montgomery County National Bank Cherryvale Kansas was convicted in federal court Fort Scott in November of aiding and abetting misapplication of funds. He received five years in Leavenworth penitentiary with credit for thirteen months already served for planning the May 1925 bank robbery involving 69100 dollars.
Chicago officials state Al Capone left town at the suggestion of Police Chief Hughes. Capone said he would go to Florida for the holidays but reportedly traveled to Tijuana, Mexico. Hughes vowed to arrest known gang members to drive them from the city. Lombardo was briefly arrested on concealed weapons charges amid a leadership challenge within the Union Siciliano.
George T. McDermott of Kansas was appointed by President Coolidge to a United States district judgeship in Kansas. Born in Winfield in 1886, he has 18 years of active litigation experience, served as special master, and studied at Southwestern College and the University of Chicago. He and his wife Katherine have three children, and he will join Judge Pollock on the bench with a salary of 10,000 dollars a year.
