New York approves broad smoking ban for bars and workplaces

Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council reached a deal extending the ban to almost all restaurants and bars, as well as offices, pool halls, bingo parlors and bowling alleys. About 13 000 establishments would be covered and the measure is expected to pass at the December 18 council meeting despite opposition from smokers and bar owners.
