Prisons see drop in executions
Washington AP reports death row executions fell to 85 in 2001, 13 fewer than 1999, with Texas and Oklahoma accounting for many of the cases. Only 214 death sentences were handed down nationwide, the lowest since 1980, amid concerns over wrongful convictions and rising skepticism about the death penalty.

Fourteen states carried out 85 executions last year, 83 men and two women, 13 fewer than 1999. Homicides fell from 24,700 in 1991 to about 15,000 last year. Since 1976, 683 prisoners in 31 states have been executed, with about 10 percent of eligible inmates actually executed due to appeals or other factors.

Wild horses sold for slaughter despite adoption signs
