Rescue Succeeds for Seven Kansas City Pier Sandhogs
Seven bridge pier workers faced death in a smoke filled diving caisson 102 feet below the Missouri River surface before rescuers led by I E Hayes saved them. The sandhogs sang to cope with fumes as a fire was extinguished and all but one were brought to the surface unassisted. O Dell was hospitalized for inhalation but not in danger. They worked on sinking a concrete pier for the Fairfax bridge.
