University of Kansas forward Carlton Bragg Jr., 20, was arrested and charged with battery after allegedly striking a woman and pushing her down stairs. He pleaded not guilty and will miss Friday’s game against Nebraska as coach Bill Self weighs a suspension.
Leslie Downing, a kindergarten teacher at Langston Hughes Elementary, was named the 2016-2017 Lawrence Master Teacher by Superintendent Kyle Hayden. The surprise ceremony in the Langston Hughes gym included a $2,500 check from Trusty Credit Union, and a nomination from parent Jessi Ward.
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the state violated the rights of a convicted sex offender by detaining him for years without trial under a claim of civil commitment as a sexually violent predator. The ruling followed Judge Benjamin Burgess’s 2014 order to release Todd Ellison from jail.
Lawrence City files suit alleging fraudulent tax scheme by Oread hotel developer Thomas Fritzel and associates. Fritzel seeks removal to federal court and designates Kansas City as trial site. The case targets The Oread hotel along with related entities over alleged racketeering and the multimillion-dollar incentive agreement.
