UNIQUE RAILWAY KING EDWARD HARRIMAN LIFTS POWER IN US RAILROAD STRUGGLE
Edward H Harriman emerges as the dominant force in the clash with J Pierpont Morgan and James J Hill, shaping terms of the peace and securing influence over Western railroads. The financier, small in stature and cautious in public exposure, is closely allied with Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Gould, and foreign banks, while Morgan remains a leading figure in finance. Harriman’s quiet approach contrasts with Morgan’s public visibility as he builds a formidable network to curb Morgan Hill ambitions. A Deepwater Missouri water shortage halts a local factory, underscoring broader disruptions in industry.
