Russell Home Demolished After Standing Since Civil War
The two story brick house at 545 Louisiana Street, longtime Edward C. Russell residence, is being taken down by new owner C. B. Rumsey who plans to build a new home on the site. Erected around 1867 by J. C. Horton, the property has rested among memories of older Lawrence residents who recall its stately appearance and garden. Edward C. Russell, a former lawyer and state legislator, bought the house circa 1880 and later served as quartermaster general and paymaster for Kansas during the Civil War era before retiring from politics in 1890. Mrs. Russell lived there until her death in 1930.

Historic Lawrence Home of the Rudigers and Russells
The Lawrence house once home to the Rudigers and Russells served as a social hub for local youths with large rooms suitable for gatherings and dancing. Mrs. Rudiger recalls a white canvas laid over carpets for dances and a bay window wedding scene. The residence features ten spacious rooms, walnut woodwork, and a notable walnut enclosed bathroom. The Russell library housed thousands of volumes and was a memorably constructed room with bespoke bookcases.

Landmark Shaw shop and club rooms described in era
The piece details a Shaw shop with double largest drawers, two pier shelves, a carved walnut desk and bookcase, a dining room with an old fashioned sideboard and mahogany pedestal table where Old and New club members like Mr. Russell gathered. It notes rooms were once commodious, many built in the late 1860s and following decades, now being replaced by smaller, compact spaces.
