Allied forces push for a large drive on Bizerte and Tunis as heavy artillery and growing air fleets threaten the axis in Tunisia. Reports note American pilots active in ground operations and renewed shelling in the Tebourba sector amid a lull after a hard fought weekend.
Big Ten faculty representatives voted to table the proposal to lift the ban on freshmen competing on varsity teams. They saw no immediate need and left open reconsideration if future athlete cuts shrink rosters. They also approved increasing the 1943 football schedule to ten games if a service team occupies the tenth game.

Washington December 9 The Pacific War Council proposes a United Nations relief and rehabilitation agency for countries freed from Axis control. Possible relief directors include Herbert Lehman. The plan envisions wartime and postwar aid to hungry populations and addresses North Africa politics and aid for China.
A regional office official from the federal works agency in St Paul will visit Lawrence next week to survey the city’s school situation. Superintendent Clifford Dean announced the plan after a long distance call with a St Paul staff member. The board seeks 25846 dollars in federal aid to offset rising costs tied to new residents due to the Sunflower Ordnance Works at Eudora. The application was recently rejected by acting regional director E B Curry.

Washington reports a mid sized U S merchant vessel exchanged fire with two enemy surface raiders in the South Atlantic. The vessel sank one raider and damaged the other before sinking herself after a 20 minute battle. ten of 41 crew survived along with five navy gunners. The fight occurred last September and the ship went down with colors flying.
Late dispatches report the Office of Price Administration approved a milk price increase for Blackwell and nearby areas. Separate items note France's colonial governor Boisson pledging West Africa will aid against Germany once U S materials arrive, and Bethlehem Steel workers voting to end a 24 hour strike over Sunday pay. A Washington report accuses the electric lamp industry of monopolizing and restraining trade through coordination with utilities and patent licensing.
Democratic national committeemen and state chairmen from Iowa Nebraska and neighboring states were invited to a noon Saturday conference in Omaha to discuss future plans of organization and definite policy. George R. eMalconi aged 59 a leading Pittsburg attorney and past potentate of Mirza Shrine died in the afternoon after a year long illness. He was active in civic affairs and a noted figure in the local community.
Navy reports that American dive bombers and torpedo planes from Guadalcanal damaged and sank Japanese ships during an attack on December 8 in waters near Santa Isabel and New Georgia. Ten Japanese float planes were shot down, and a U.S. aircraft and crew were lost.
The Fighting French headquarters said German forces have taken 100 Lyon residents as hostages after a December 1 attack on a German soldier. Some hostages are women, and they are awaiting execution in Lyon’s prison Centrale. The move marks the first hostage action in unoccupied France since November 11.
The county health unit director and staff were rehired for 1943 at existing salary and travel allowances. A resolution honoring Dr. A J Anderson, a former board member who died, will be spread on the minutes and a copy sent to his family. American fighter pilots shot down six of seven Messerschmitts over Marble Arch landing ground west of El Agheila in Libya. The British communique noted several German planes damaged and one Allied plane lost. Also three enemy transport planes and one escorting fighter were shot down off Lampedusa with two Allied planes lost.
Federal Judge Richard J. Hopkins suspends a two year term for Everett E. Frazier who pleaded guilty to transporting liquor into dry Kansas. The ruling recalls Frazier’s 1940 bank robbery pursuit in Moline Kansas when he chased a bandit, helped catch him, and brought back $600.
The Douglas County Farm Bureau holds its annual meeting Friday December 11 at Friends Church 1601 New Hampshire Street. Activities include an achievement day luncheon, election of executive board officers, county 4 H reports, and multiple unit displays with pageants and musical numbers.
Chairman Laighton Melvin reports that the fuel oil panel has received auxiliary applications from trailer owners but cannot issue coupons on all original applications yet. He urges dealers who have not received coupons to secure a week or ten days of supply by tomorrow evening when purchases on promises end.
