Joe Goddard defeated Peter Maher in the third round of their brutal bout at Coney Island Athletic Club before about 5,000 spectators. At sunrise this morning four colored prisoners Dennis McCarthy Stephen Bits Grant Thomas and Nelson Lewie were executed for wilful murder after a long procession to the scaffold. The crowd watched as the condemned men climbed the steps and faced the noose, with McCarthy trembling as the execution began.
A brave unidentified girl warned a Southern Pacific passenger train near Greota Pass Oregon, prompting the engineer to stop before a high trestle. Wreckers had removed outside rail and, without the warning, the train of twelve cars with 250 people would have plunged into the rocky gulch below. The train reached Grant Pass safely after the incident.
