Hidden Lawrence site holds stories of bricks and secrets
The Lawrence Vitrified Brick and Tile Co site in Lawrence, once producing 35,000 bricks daily for early paving, now awaits a public nature park offer by Bert Nash. The cabin, pond, rumored alligator, steam shovel, and Bleeding Kansas legacy of Jacob Branson spark historians’ curiosity as residents may explore the property next year.

Green's Park Zoo on Massachusetts Street 1930s era tale
Lawrence’s Green created a private zoo at 138 Alabama Street in a several acre riverfront parcel known as Green's Park. Animals included a Gila monster coyotes raccoons red foxes bears a 7 foot alligator and Suzie the Monkey. The zoo operated from the mid 1930s until 1951 when floodwaters and loss of interest ended it. The site later became tied to the city’s history through clippings and family records kept by Harlan Miller. Green also kept Civil War relics old presses tools and a river skull in an old log cabin on the property.
